This article aims to track the history of the Portuguese historian Alexandre Herculano, his education and career choices. For this purpose, we emphasize his early years of learning and the importance of his exile experience, before entering his professional development and the junction of his affairs as librarian and historian. We want to show the conciliation between the two stages, while discussing the construction process of the 19th century historiography — when a historian, in order to write his historic summary, should firstly gather the necessary materials through unremitting researching, cataloging and studying documents that had not been properly handled to serve such purposes. Finally, we show how Alexandre Herculano was read over the years and the change of the analytical studies’ critique perspectiveEste artigo busca apresentar a trajetória do historiador português Alexandre Herculano, sua formação e escolhas profissionais. Para tal objetivo, salientamos os anos iniciais de aprendizado e a importância da experiência do exílio, para então, adentrar ao seu desenvolvimento profissional e à junção dos afazeres de bibliotecário aos de historiador. Pretendemos demonstrar a conciliação entre as duas instâncias, ao mesmo tempo em que discutimos o processo de construção da historiografia oitocentista em que o historiador, para escrever sua síntese histórica, deveria antes de tudo reunir os materiais necessários através de incessantes buscas, catalogações e estudos de documentos que ainda não haviam sido adequadamente manuseados para servir a tais propósitos. A culta barbaria: ruínas e patrimônio em Alexandre Herculano

In the mid-19th century, speeches defending historical heritage became more relevant to intellectuals who realized that many important constructions for the national memory´s configuration were in ruins. Alexandre Herculano (1810-1877) can be read as one of the pioneers in the debates about the value of heritage and the possible intervention policies in a building or construction. In view of European urban developments and conceptions of historical heritage, we propose a case study of the Portuguese based on the analysis of Alexandre Herculano’s Monumentos Pátrios, published in Panorama in 1838. We aim to understand the formation of debates about historical heritage that took place in Portugal, also considering the theories structured by several other scholars who wrote in similar periods and, somehow, reflected on these architectural ruins.Em meados do século XIX, os discursos em defesa do patrimônio histórico ganharam relevância na fala de intelectuais que se depararam com o estado de arruinamento de uma série de construções importantes para a configuração da memória nacional. Alexandre Herculano (1810-1877) pode ser lido como um dos precursores nos debates em torno do valor do patrimônio e das possíveis políticas de intervenções nos edifícios. Tendo em vista a formação do panorama europeu em torno dos desenvolvimentos urbanos e concepções do patrimônio histórico, voltamo-nos para o caso português a partir da análise dos Monumentos Pátrios do escritor, publicado em O Panorama em 1838. Objetivamos entender a formação dos debates que ocorreram em Portugal em torno do patrimônio histórico, levando em consideração também as teorizações realizadas por uma série de outros autores que escreveram em período semelhante (meados do XIX e início do XX) e, de alguma forma, refletiram sobre essas ruínas arquitetônicas

As fronteiras entre a História e a ficção possibilitaram a escrita de diversos textos oitocentistas que jogavam com essa dualidade conceitual. Alexandre Herculano (1810-1877) atuou intensamente nesse sentido, criando uma ficção histórica, característica do Romantismo português, ao trabalhar simultaneamente com objetos históricos e a imaginação. Ao mesmo tempo, percebemos na “Crônica do Descobrimento do Brasil” (1840) de Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen (1816-1878) a presença de vários elementos característicos dessa Literatura desenvolvida por Herculano. A partir de uma leitura paralela dos textos de ambos os autores, procura-se perceber os caminhos tomados para a elaboração desse projeto literário oitocentista, que lançava as bases para um romance histórico lusitano, e a forma como tais elementos se desenvolveram nas obras em questão

História e imaginação histórica: a “Crônica do Descobrimento do Brasil” de Varnhagen e as narrativas de Alexandre Herculano * History and historical imagination: The Varnhagen’s “Crônica do Descobrimento do Brasil” and the Alexandre Herculano’s narratives

The boundaries between history and fiction enabled the writing of many nineteenthcentury texts that played with this conceptual dualism. Alexandre Herculano (1810-1877) worked intensively towards this direction, creating a historical fiction characteristic of Portuguese romanticism while working with historical objects and imagination. In the Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen’s (1816-1878) “Crônica do Descobrimento do Brasil” (1840) we also noticed the presence of several characteristic features of this literature developed by Herculano. By a parallel reading of the texts of both authors, we seek to understand the paths taken to the construction of the nineteenth-century literary project, which laid the foundation for a Lusitanian historical novel, and how these elements are developed in such works.As fronteiras entre a História e a ficção possibilitaram a escrita de diversos textos oitocentistas que jogavam com essa dualidade conceitual. A fim de melhor compreender a obra abordada e sua relação com o autor e seu contexto de produção, buscamos inicialmente apresentar a trajetória do historiador português, sua formação e escolhas profissionais. Salientamos também, os anos iniciais de aprendizado e a importância da experiência do exílio, para então, adentrar ao seu desenvolvimento profissional e à junção dos afazeres de bibliotecário aos de historiador. Pretendemos demonstrar a conciliação entre as duas instâncias, ao mesmo tempo em que discutimos o processo de construção da historiografia oitocentista em que o historiador, para escrever sua síntese histórica, deveria antes de tudo reunir os materiais necessários através de incessantes buscas, catalogações e estudos de documentos que ainda não haviam sido adequadamente manuseados para servir a tais propósitos. Nosso objetivo foi demonstrar a importância dada por Herculano para as fontes documentais e compreender como as utilizava para construir sua narrativa histórica. A partir da compreensão das relações estabelecidas entre o historiador e seu material de pesquisa, intentamos delinear os caminhos percorridos pelo autor para a construção de seu discurso. Estabelecemos, por fim, uma relação entre história, imaginação e literatura, a fim de perceber as distinções possíveis de um mesmo tema abordado a partir do viés histórico, no caso, o primeiro livro da História de Portugal, e do viés literário em O BoboAbstract: This work proposes a study on the writing of the History of Portugal by Alexandre Herculano. In order to better understand the work dealt with and its relationship with the author and his context of production, we initially seek to present the trajectory of the Portuguese historian, his training and professional choices. We also emphasize the initial years of learning and the importance of the experience of exile, and then, to enter into his professional development and the joining of the tasks of librarian to those of historian. We intend to demonstrate the conciliation between the two instances, at the same time as we discuss the process of construction of eighteenth century historiography in which the historian, to write his historical synthesis, should first of all gather the necessary materials through incessant searches, catalogs and studies of documents that had not yet been properly handled to serve such purposes. Our objective was to demonstrate the importance given by Herculaneum to documentary sources and to understand how he used them to construct his historical narrative. From the understanding of the relations established between the historian and his research material, we try to delineate the paths taken by the author for the construction of his discourse. Finally, we establish a relation between history, imagination and literature, in order to perceive the possible distinctions of the same theme approached from the historical bias, in the case, the first book of the History of Portugal, and the literary bias in The BoboDoutoradoPolitica, Memoria e CidadeDoutora em História5632-13-7CAPE

The nineteenth-century historical fiction : settings of historic and literary Varnhagen and Alexandre Herculano

Ao utilizarem a história como base temática para suas narrativas, escreveram textos que atravessaram as fronteiras de uma verdade histórica objetiva, ao mesmo tempo em que criaram universos ficcionais que já não podiam ser considerados como essencialmente imaginativos. By using the History as the thematic basis for their narratives, these authors wrote texts that crossed the boundaries of an objective historical truth in the same time they were creating fictional universes that could no longer be considered as essentially imaginative.
